Fans Slam Tana Mongeau For Asking Artists to Work for Promo
Published
2 years agoon

- Tana Mongeau posted on her Instagram story asking if someone wanted to do her makeup in exchange for promotion.
- Many users criticized her, saying that she should financially compensate artists for their work.
- She defended herself on Twitter, saying that fans have asked to do her makeup for promotion before.
What Happened?
YouTuber Tana Mongeau is under fire for asking makeup artists to work for promo, but not pay.
The YouTuber posted to her Instagram story on Thursday saying, “Looking for [a Makeup artist] in LA that would wanna work together frequently in exchange for an abundance of promo.”

She added that she was looking for someone who is “flexible” and “willing to accept mainly promo as compensation.”
Twitter Users React Online
Fans criticized her for this, pointing out that with over four million YouTube subscribers, and based on the lifestyle she leads, she likely has the money to pay makeup artists.
While there are no verified numbers, several outlets including Co Ed and Super Hub estimate that Mongeau’s net worth is at least one million dollars.
One Twitter user said, “If your promo is so worth it that you can guarantee people will watch it & you will be paid, why can you not pay artists for their work?”
@tanamongeau is looking for an MUA that is willing to be compensated for “mainly” an abundance of promo.
— Charlie (@charlietheories) April 26, 2019
if your promo is so worth it that you can guarantee people will watch it & you will be paid, why can you not pay artists for their work? smh
Another asked her to “do better” and pointed out that most professions would never be asked to do something for just promotion.
Why do influences who make good money want shit for free? Promo only goes so far and people have to make a living. If a plumber came to fix ur toilet would u offer them promo as compensation? Plumber or MUA, ESPECIALLY ART, deserves $$ compensation. Do better @tanamongeau
— Kalie (@KalieChebib) April 26, 2019
While one posted that she should “be ashamed.”
“Hey I need MUA to provide cosmetic services at my beck and call, but I’m only paying in promotion & exposure. I’ll be giving you promo, but I won’t be paying you and you have to be flexible enough to accommodate my busy schedule!”
— Blue Ivy's Au Pair (@MikeyTBH) April 26, 2019
lmfao @tanamongeau you should be ashamed.
Tana’s Response
One user responded to Tana asking her to delete the post from her story, prompting her to be involved in a discussion on Twitter about the situation.
She said that lots of artists ask her for promo on a regular basis. She also pointed out that she was clear about her methods of compensation in the post because she knows that being offered promo is different than receiving a paycheck.
hahahahah why!!!
— Tana Mongeau (@tanamongeau) April 26, 2019
absolutely that’s why i clarified right now that this would be primarily paid in exposure! lots of small MUA’s hit me up constantly asking me to help them gain exposure not to pay so i’m doing just that!!

Mark Rober Faces Backlash Over NEXT For Autism Fundraiser

April 20, 2021
- YouTuber Mark Rober is facing backlash for hosting a star-studded fundraiser with Jimmy Kimmel for the charity NEXT for Autism.
- Rober announced the fundraiser in a video on Friday where he shared that his son is on the autism spectrum.
- Many online, including several people in the autistic community, said NEXT supports finding treatments and cures for autism, something the community does not believe in. Some also were frustrated that the group supports the controversial practice of Applied Behavioral Analysis, a therapy that targets and changes certain social skills..
- Following the criticism, NEXT released a statement saying it does not support finding a cure for autism and that while it does deal with ABA, the practice has changed over the years and it does not support dangerous variations.
Mark Rober’s Fundraiser Faces Backlash
YouTuber Mark Rober is facing backlash for an upcoming livestream fundraiser he is hosting with talk show host Jimmy Kimmel to support NEXT for Autism.
The livestream, called Color the Spectrum, will be held on April 30 and will feature major television, film, and internet celebrities including MrBeast, Jack Black, Charli and Dixie D’Amelio, Andy Samberg, Paul Rudd, Mark Hamill, Sarah Silverman, Terry Crews, Rhett & Link, and John Oliver. Rober announced the event in a video on Friday titled “The Truth About My Son” where he revealed that his son is autistic. According to Rober’s donation tab on YouTube, the initiative has already brought in over $850,000 for NEXT for Autism.
While some people have applauded his efforts, others are slamming Rober, Kimmel, and the other stars participating in the event for aiding the organization. Many people in the autistic community believe that NEXT for Autism’s work does not help autistic people; rather, they claim it actually harms them.
On Twitter, many said the organization promotes and supports finding a “cure” for autism, something that many in the community do not believe in. NEXT is tied to a variety of groups, including Autism Speaks and The Center for Autism and the Developing Brain, which have been criticized for similar reasons.
While Autism Speaks has removed “cures” from its mission statement, the latter still says it is devoted to finding “treatments.” Many circulated a screenshot of a mission statement from CADB where prevention efforts were listed as a focus, as well; however, that no longer appears on its website.
REMINDER that there IS NOT a ‘cure’ for autism. We are fine as we are we are NOT sick or ill and charities like ‘next to autism’ and ‘autism speaks’ are incredibly abliest and are ‘working towards a cure’ even though they very little of the donation money towards the ‘cure’ /srs

This center is named the Center for Autism and the Developing Brain.

Others were critical of NEXT’s support for a practice called Applied Behavioral Analysis, which is a therapy that targets and changes certain social skills. Some have described this as a “conversion therapy” for autistic people.
This brings me to the charity Mark promotes, Next For Autism. Immediately this drew criticism for the organization's support of ABA Therapy.
— Dave Thibault (@Dave_Thibault) April 18, 2021
ABA Therapy has ties with Gay Conversion Therapy. And has been linked to PTSD, trauma, and even suicide.

Additionally, people took issue with the fact that NEXT does not have a lot of autisic people on its board or working in leadership positions for the group. Some also disagreed with the way Rober painted autism in his video, feeling that he suggested autistic people’s main contributions to the world were limited to their positivity.
There's a lot to be upset about in that video (implying every autistic person has a "superpower" or is a savant, the use of person first language, the implication that autistic people can't contribute anything of value to society except generic "positivity")
— Nora is mean now 🏳️🌈 (@freakette_) April 16, 2021
Petition Calls for Event to Be Canceled
A petition calling for the event to be canceled currently has over 10,000 signatures. It compared some of NEXT’s practices to eugenics and said the group supports “other extremely harmful ideologies that all come down to the sole purpose of ending the existence of autistic people.”
The petition suggested that people who want to donate to the autistic community should find other organizations like the Autism Self Advocacy Network.
A Twitter user named Dave Shaw wrote an open letter to those involved in the fundraiser asking them to not support NEXT.
“As an austistic adult, I can assure you that like any other marginalised community we want and need acceptance and to be included in society,” he wrote. “The organization behind the upcoming livestream, Next For Autism, does not provide nor aim for this.”
He backed many of the other issues people have had with NEXT, calling ABA “traumatic” and a from of “child abuse.” He also stood against efforts to cure autism.
“Autism is not a disease or a defect to be cured. It is simply a form of diversity,” he wrote.
His letter caught the attention of YouTubers Rhett & Link, who were scheduled to appear in the livestream.
“Thank you for bringing this to our attention,” they wrote back. “We are no longer participating in the event.”
Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We are no longer participating in the event.

NEXT For Autism Responds
Following the backlash, NEXT released a statement on Monday defending its practices and denying allegations that it is funding efforts to cure autism.
There have been inaccurate and outrageous accusations being leveled at our organization. Please read the below for the truth about what NEXT for AUTISM supports and stands for. For more information on the work we do, please read this FAQ: https://t.co/jCMgcfEkIm pic.twitter.com/Xd1kBSJoSg
— NEXT for AUTISM (@NEXTforAUTISM) April 19, 2021
“There have been some outrageous misinformation circulating about Next for Autism, its mission, methods, and partners,” that statement said.
“Our mission has never been the cure or prevention of autism, in fact, NEXT was created to fill a void,” it continued, adding that when it was founded, most groups aiding the autistic community were working to fund biomedical research, while NEXT was focused on school services.
The statement then addressed NEXT’s partnership with Autism Speaks and said it only works with the group to aid its mission of expanding access to programs and services.
“Anyone using these partnerships to draw a line from NEXT to eugenics or anything related to the prevention and cure of autism is doing an enormous disservice to the people we serve by spreading this gross untruth.”
Regarding ABA, NEXT said the methodology has changed over the years and bears no resemblance to the conversion therapy-like treatments people are claiming the group supports.
NEXT also said it is committed to including more Autistic board members in the future.
For his part, Rober wrote that proceeds from Color the Spectrum will go directly towards services to helping autistic people after they graduate towards high school, a time period where programs are particularly lacking. His post did not directly address the backlash, but clarified where money raised will go.
In my video I mention there is a “services cliff” after an autistic person graduates from High School (my son is almost there). Every last penny raised from #ColorTheSpectrum will go towards helping that transition. The 3 buckets below are the extent of how the money will be used pic.twitter.com/1DEchwO8nl

- Former Vlog Squad member Dom Zeglaitis, AKA Durte Dom, responded to allegations that he raped a girl in 2018 who was too drunk to consent to sexual activity.
- He wrote on his Instagram story that he wants to “sincerely apologize directly to the women involved in this incident,” but as far as he is concerned, everything that happened “was completely consensual.”
- He added that the statements being made about him “unfairly” defame his character and that he is donating “thousands of dollars” to women’s charities.
Durte Dom Responds
Former Vlog Squad member Dom Zeglaitis, AKA Durte Dom, responded to allegations that he raped a woman who was too drunk to consent to sexual activity in 2018 and claimed that in his eyes, everything was “completely consensual.”
The accusation against Zeglaitis came to light in March after Insider reported that it had spoken to the victim who had appeared in a Vlog Squad video with her friends the night she was allegedly raped. She also claimed that members of the group supplied her and her friends with alcohol, as they were under 21 at the time.
Zeglaitis did not give a comment to Insider, and in the month following the report, he went dormant on social media. Last week, he returned to TikTok, posting content as-usual despite pressure in the comments section to speak about the allegation.
Over the weekend, he issued a response on his Instagram story. His account is currently set to private, so only people who follow Zeglaitis could see the post.
“I want to sincerely apologize directly to the women involved in this incident,” he wrote. “I definitely empathize with the pain that everyone has suffered in this matter.”
“With that being said, as far as I am concerned, everything that occurred during the night in question was completely consensual,” he continued. “I believe the statements that have come out against me are entirely misleading and shed an incorrect light on my involvement.”
“My character is being unfairly attacked and the statements that exist in the public eye are unfairly defaming and assaulting my character and reputation.”
Zegliatis claimed that since the Insider report came out, he has donated “thousands of dollars” to womens’ rights charities to show his “support for the unjustified and unnecessary struggles that women endure in our society on a daily basis.”
“It is time for all of us to demonstrate more respect for one another in every facet of life,” he added.
Responses to Statement
His response was not received well by numerous people on social media, who were frustrated that he did not take responsibility for his alleged actions. Many were also upset that the post was primarily about himself and did not reflect on the situation, consent, or any of his past behavior.
You ruined a girls life, you ruined careers, dragged other people into your mess and you still can’t take responsibility for any part you played in this??? You drugged that girl and you assaulted her, what part of that is “consensual” https://t.co/GCxVVdmfJe
— Jordan T (@jtag123) April 18, 2021
let’s not forget that donating money does make you a changed person.
— Phoebe🤍 (@phoeb01x) April 17, 2021
Only reason why he’s apologised is because his “character” is being negatively spoke about🤮🤮 https://t.co/p1vuwzrvgy
“Not consensual if the girl is blacked out,” YouTuber Trisha Paytas wrote.
Not consensual if the girl is blacked out. The video CLEARLY STATES the girls were not having it and after hours of “master negotiation” they all were having sex. HE DESERVES TO BE IN PRISON. they were given alcohol , this was admitted that alcohol was there – this is RAPE https://t.co/iOG81O1cDL
— Trisha Paytas (@trishapaytas) April 17, 2021
The allegation against Zeglaitis, as well as other claims about a general culture of toxicity within the Vlog Squad, have taken the creator world by storm. The group’s frontman and one of YouTube’s biggest stars, David Dobrik, has issued multiple apologies about the incident.
Dobrik has also lost major brand deals and stepped away from Dispo, a social media app he co-founded. He is currently taking a break from social media to rethink the way the production of his content is structured. He also said he has distanced himself from Zegalitis.

- YouTuber Jake Paul is denying allegations that he sexually assaulted TikToker Justine Paradise in the summer of 2019.
- “Not only have I never had any sexual relationship with this individual, but this claim is solely a manufactured accusation and a blatant attempt for attention during a highly visible fight week,” Paul wrote in a statement Tuesday.
- He added that he plans on pursuing a defamation of character case “to the fullest extent of the law.”
- Paradise, who posted a 20-minute video Friday accusing him of assault, has rejected claims that she lied for attention and said all she wants is an apology.
Jake Paul Denies Allegation
YouTuber Jake Paul denied allegations that he sexually assaulted TikToker Justine Paradise and said he will pursue legal action against her.
Paradise posted a 20-minute video on Friday claiming that Paul sexually assaulted her in the summer of 2019. She said Paul brought her to his room, where they began kissing, but claimed that she signaled she was uninterested in going any further. She alleged Paul then said, “If nothing is going to happen, then what’s the point?” before unzipping his pants and forcing her to perform oral sex on him.
“He was on top of me and like, holding my head into him,” she said in her video. “Like I couldn’t even tell him not to…He didn’t ask for consent or anything.”
Paul first denied the allegation on Tuesday in a statement via his attorney, Daniel E. Gardenswartz.
“While others have already begun to debunk the claim alleged against him, our client categorically denies the allegation and has every intention of aggressively disproving it and pursuing legal action against those responsible for the defamation of his character,” Gardenswartz said.
“Our client believes that any false allegations diminish the credibility of those who have truly been victims of misconduct.”
Paul Accuses Justine Paradise of Seeking Attention, Financial Gains
Paul then shared a statement of his own on Twitter, where he again denied the claim and said he takes the topic of sexual assault seriously.
“Not only have I never had any sexual relationship with this individual, but this claim is solely a manufactured accusation and a blatant attempt for attention during a highly visible fight week,” he wrote, referencing his upcoming match against UFC star Ben Askren.
— Jake Paul (@jakepaul) April 13, 2021
“This individual is directly using the attention from her social media posts and video to promote her adult content website and Amazon shopping list,” Paul continued. He added that he plans to pursue a defamation of character case “to the fullest extent of the law.”
“At the time of her story I was in a relationship, and as someone who was a momma’s boy growing up, I respect women and mothers more than anything. I most certainly have never laid a finger on a girl without their consent.”
“I will fight this to the end to prove my innocence,” he wrote.
Paradise Responds
Paradise responded to his statement on her Instagram story. She specifically criticized Paul for accusing her of lying in order to get gifts and other financial gains.
“I wasn’t even aware that I still had an Amazon wishlist,” she wrote. “I just checked and there were literally six items on it.”
“I am not looking for gifts or money,” she continued. “I made it very clear that all I wanted from him was an apology. And for him to stop doing this to people.”
She also claimed that since posting her video, a minor came forward to her and shared a similar experience with Paul. She provided no further details about that interaction but encouraged other women to speak to her if they had also been assaulted or harassed by Paul.
